Vilken är tidernas
bästa musikvideo?
Rolling Stone firar MTV:s 40-årsdag med den ultimata listan.
Den första augusti 2021 fyllde MTV 40 år och eftersom 99 procent av västvärldens tidningsredaktörer växte upp med den legendariska musikkanalen har nyhetsflödet svämmat över av nostalgiska hyllningsreportage i sommar.
Att musikbibeln Rolling Stone passade på att ranka tidernas 100 bästa musikvideos var en självklarhet. Av mina personliga favoriter – som Aphex Twins ”Come to Daddy”, Björks ”It’s Oh So Quiet” och Smashing Pumpkins ”Tonight, Tonight” – var det bara Guns N’ Roses ”November Rain” som tog sig in på topp 10-listan.
Rolling Stone röstade fram Beyoncés ”Formation” framför Johnny Cashs ”Hurt” och Madonnas ”Vogue” som tidernas bästa musikvideo.
Saxat ur motiveringen:
”In under five minutes, Beyoncé moves from a plantation-style house where the black denizens are the masters not the slaves to the top of a sinking police car. Notably, she released the video in the first week of Black History Month 2016. Days later, she would perform the song at the Super Bowl, surrounded by dancers in outfits inspired by the Black Panthers.”
Regissören Melina Matsoukas har tidigare berättat om syftet med videon för The New Yorker:
“I wanted to show — this is black people. We triumph, we suffer, we’re drowning, we’re being beaten, we’re dancing, we’re eating, and we’re still here.”
